Webster was originally part of Boscawen, which remained unincorporated until 1760. In 1791, residents of the western part of town petitioned for their section to be separated and named Bristol. To avoid division, residents of the eastern section of town voted to erect a second meetinghouse for their western neighbors. The separation, however, finally happened in 1860, when a new town was incorporated as Webster in honor of Daniel Webster, an attorney who served as secretary of state during the William Henry HarrisonJohn Tyler and Millard Fillmore administrations. Mount Webster and Webster Lake also get their named for the famed statesman.
